Beware! when choosing a jazz band for your wedding, be very careful to make sure you get a band that can totally do what you want. Firstly decide what sort of songs you want to hear from your band at your wedding. Think about which artists you would like to hear on your day and what moods you want to convey at various times of the day. This is the best position to take when you choose the jazz band you hire for your big day. One aspect to consider is flexibility. Do you want different styles of jazz at different points of the wedding day? Having a band who only play modern jazz may not be particularly helpful if at some point you want to party. A Wedding is a celebration and as such people want to dance. What sort of dancing can you do to modern jazz?

Let’s start at the top of the day. The bride and groom have been married, they are in the car and making their way to the reception. Some of your guests are already at the wedding reception and the rest of them are following in cars. Having a jazz band poised to play as the bride, groom and guests appear at the reception is a great time for music. What kind of music? New Orleans, Speakeasy, Great Gatsby, Prohibition style jazz is perfect at this point. A band that can play acoustically is just the ticket for a summer wedding. Especially if the weather is good and everyone is outside.

As the wedding day progresses, and the guests move in doors to the wedding breakfast, it’s time for some quiet, sophisticated dinner jazz from your band. Here is a great list of suggestions. The kind of music that can just “sit” under the conversation and create a lovely ambience. What wedding breakfast wouldn’t benefit from this type of jazz at this point? Things are about to change. Come the end of the speeches it will be time for some full on celebration. To be strictly truthful the type of music you want is less likely to be jazz, but more likely to be jazzy.

A lot of people have a concept of jazz which is at odds with the reality. People engage with the image of jazz. They like the smokey room,  the young attractive black man with the cool suit and hat, the sax slung around his neck. The reality of jazz is that a lot of it is music that takes a lot of listening. For the dancing we suggest a band that is jazzy. Jazzy like Stevie Wonder, jazz like Prince, jazz like Bill Withers. A wedding really comes alive with a band that can adapt to two sets of full on dancing, playing party band hits? Imagine what would would happen if the band was stuck playing pure jazz all night. Would the guests dance in this situation? I don’t think so.
